Counting steps just got fun

By Nick Tatt 10 Nov 2015

One of the highlights of our job is being able to make products of our own. Tinderhouse has been experimenting, learning, playing and launching products of our own since the company started over 13 years ago and this week sees the launch of our latest app - Step Counter & Calorie Tracker by Map My Tracks.

Map My Tracks is a global fitness network used by people around the world to track their outdoor activities and its newest app (there are already two others) is aimed at making the everyday task of walking fun to measure.

From #1 Health & Fitness App to Product Line Expansion

Step Counter & Calorie Tracker represents strategic product expansion from our flagship Map My Tracks platform, which has maintained #1 ranking in the App Store's Health & Fitness category whilst serving millions of users across 190+ countries since 2007. Leveraging 18 years of GPS tracking expertise and motion sensor integration developed through our partnership with BSkyB (Sky Corporation) as Official Technology Partner to Team Sky (2010-2015), we applied professional-grade sensor accuracy to consumer fitness tracking.

The technical challenges included optimising battery efficiency for continuous background tracking, integrating with Apple's HealthKit framework for seamless wearable compatibility, designing for 11 languages to serve our global user base, and creating engaging gamification (avatar selection) to drive daily usage. This app demonstrates our capability to extend proven platforms into new product offerings whilst maintaining the technical excellence that earned our core platform its #1 ranking.

Step Counter & Calorie Tracker takes advantage of the motion coprocessor available in some of the newest iPhones to passively measure your steps throughout the day. Once installed it simply works in the background with no battery drain and provides users with a wealth of information about their step count for today, this week, month, year and all time.

It integrates with Apple's Health app which means users can use compatible wearables in conjunction with the app.

Counting up the numbers is one thing but to make things a little more interesting users can also choose an interactive avatar to represent their mood for that day. Casual, street or formal attire don the avatar to match the user's preference. Who will you choose?
