What we did

  • Native iOS development
  • Integration with Core Motion
  • Energy-efficient background processing architecture
  • Real-time data synchronisation with cloud profiles
  • User-centric interface design for daily fitness monitoring
  • Implementation of an MVP approach to validate core tracking features

About the project

Map My Tracks is a well-established name in the fitness and outdoor pursuit sector, known for their comprehensive tracking tools for cyclists and runners. However, they identified a gap in their ecosystem for a lightweight, always-on solution that could monitor everyday movement without the complexity of a full training suite. The Map My Tracks Step Counter was conceived as the answer to this need, providing a dedicated tool for users who want to monitor their health through daily walking goals.

By focusing on a minimum viable product strategy, we were able to isolate the most important metric for health-conscious users: the daily step count. The app serves as a seamless extension of the broader Map My Tracks platform, allowing users to contribute to their overall fitness profile simply by carrying their phone. It removes the friction of manually starting and stopping an activity, making fitness tracking an effortless, passive experience that fits into a busy lifestyle.

Our development team worked to ensure that the Step Counter was not just another pedometer app but a robust piece of mobile app engineering that could handle the nuances of modern hardware. We focused on building a tool that feels native to the user's device while maintaining the unique brand identity and data integrity that Map My Tracks users have come to expect over the years.

The Challenge

The primary obstacle in creating an always-on step counter is the significant drain on hardware resources. Most fitness apps require active GPS or constant sensor polling, which can drastically reduce a smartphone's battery life over the course of a day. This creates a poor user experience where the utility of the app is outweighed by the inconvenience of a dead battery.

Battery Conservation: Maintaining high accuracy without keeping the phone's primary processor in a high-power state.

Accuracy Across Devices: Ensuring consistent step detection across various hardware manufacturers and sensor qualities.

Data Fragmentation: Managing the synchronisation of background data with the primary Map My Tracks web platform without duplications.

Passive Operation: Developing a system that remains active in the background even after device reboots or memory clears by the operating system.

Our Solution

To address these challenges, we moved away from generic tracking methods and leaned into platform-specific technologies. Our goal was to create an app that "just works" in the pocket of the user, requiring zero interaction to provide accurate results.

Platform-Specific Optimisation

We used native app development techniques to access the dedicated motion co-processors found in modern iPhone devices. These chips are designed specifically to handle sensor data like steps and movement at a fraction of the power cost of the main CPU. By tapping directly into these low-level APIs, we ensured that Map My Tracks Step Counter has a negligible impact on battery life, even when running twenty-four hours a day.

Seamless Ecosystem Integration

The app was built to be part of a larger whole. We developed a custom sync engine that pushes data to the Map My Tracks cloud at optimal intervals. This ensures that a user’s total activity across all Map My Tracks apps is consolidated in one place. Whether they are recording a 50-mile bike ride on the main app or a 10-minute walk to the office on the Step Counter, their progress towards health goals is accurately reflected on their profile.

Motivational UI and UX

Beyond the technical backend, we designed an interface that prioritises clarity and motivation. The dashboard provides an immediate snapshot of daily progress against a set goal, using intuitive visual cues to encourage users to stay active. By focusing on fitness and wellness app development best practices, we created a user journey that celebrates small wins, making the habit of walking more rewarding and engaging for the long term.

The Results

The launch of the Map My Tracks Step Counter has successfully expanded the brand's reach into the daily wellness market. It has become a vital entry point for new users who may not yet be ready for high-intensity sports tracking but are keen to monitor their general health levels.

High User Retention: The "set and forget" nature of the app has led to high daily active usage figures.

Industry-Leading Battery Performance: Testing showed that the app consumes less than 1% of total battery life over a standard 16-hour day.

Platform Growth: Thousands of new users have been funnelled into the wider Map My Tracks ecosystem through the Step Counter app.

Technical Highlights

Core Motion (iOS): Deep integration with Apple's M-series co-processors for efficient movement detection.

Google Fit API (Android): Used for reliable, system-level step counting across a fragmented device landscape.

Background Fetching: Implemented smart scheduling for data uploads to minimise radio usage and save power.

Bespoke UI Framework: A lightweight frontend designed to load instantly and provide real-time updates without lag.
